New Garda powers to arrest disqualified drivers

GardaIn Quarter 2 this year the Garda were given the power to arrest people caught driving while disqualified. Before this, those caught driving while disqualified could be summoned to court but the case could take months to actually reach the courts.

With their new powers, the Garda can arrest drivers and bring them to court on the day of arrest if a court is sitting, or the next day.

In 2014 the number of prosecutions for driving while disqualified was 1,392, an 8% increase on the previous year.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe, hopes that these new powers will reduce the number of people driving while disqualified and improve the safety on the roads.
